Please take time to prepare your heart and mind for worship.
The Light of the Candle Symbolizes Christ’s Presence Among Us
† Call to Worship † Please stand as you are able.
Leader: From the rising to the setting sun,
People: God summons us.
Leader: In the perfect beauty all around us,
People: God brightens our hearts.
Leader: When we worship with acts of love and mercy,
All: God is pleased to give us the kingdom.
† Hymn “How Firm a Foundation” #529, verses 1, 2, 3, & 5
† Please stand as you are able.
1. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
is laid for your faith in his excellent word!
What more can he say than to you he hath said,
to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
2. “Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
for I am thy God and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand
upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
3. “When through deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;
for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
5. “The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.”
Unison Prayer You may be seated.
All: Mighty God, dress us for action, for the world is in need of our care. Turn us from our selfish ways and help us share the fat of this good land. For when we refuse and rebel, we reap what we have sown. Your care and compassion call to us. Your mercy and grace reach out to us. Heal us this day, and may it be Your good pleasure to give us the kingdom. Amen.
Ministry Minute
Children’s Time “The B-I-B-L-E”
The B-I-B-L-E, yes, that’s the book for me,
I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E.
Reading from the New Testament: Hebrews 11:1-10 (NRSVUE)
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain’s. Through this he received approval as righteous, God himself giving approval to his gifts; he died, but through his faith he still speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken so that he did not experience death, and “he was not found, because God had taken him.” For it was attested before he was taken away that “he had pleased God.” 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would approach God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 7 By faith Noah, warned by God about events as yet unseen, respected the warning and built an ark to save his household; by this he condemned the world and became an heir to the righteousness that is in accordance with faith.
8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance, and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Leader: This is the Word of God, for the People of God.
All: Thanks be to God.
Favorite Hymn “I’ll Fly Away” #2282
1. Some glad morning when this life is o’er, I’ll fly away;
to a home on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly away.
Refrain: I’ll fly away, O glory. I’ll fly away
When I die, hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly away.
2. When the shadows of this life have grown, I’ll fly away.
Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I’ll fly away. [Refrain]
3. Just a few more weary days and then I’ll fly away;
to a land where joys shall never end, I’ll fly away. [Refrain]
Joys and Concerns Silent Prayer Pastoral Prayer
The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
Reading from the Gospel: Luke 12:32-40 (NRSVUE)
32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
35 “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36 be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes during the middle of the night or near dawn and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
39 “But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
Sermon “Don’t Be Afraid” by Pastor Marge
Hymn “He Has Made Me Glad” #2270, sing twice
I will enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart,
I will enter his courts with praise.
I will say, “This is the day that the Lord has made.”
I will rejoice, for he has made me glad.
He has made me glad, he has made me glad.
I will rejoice, for he has made me glad.
He has made me glad, he has made me glad.
I will rejoice, for he has made me glad.

Give thanks with a grateful heart, Give thanks to the Holy one, Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His son. And now let the weak say, “I am strong”; let the poor say, “I am rich because of what The Lord has done for us.” Give Thanks.
† Prayer Of Thanksgiving † Please stand as you are able.
All: God of grace and God of glory, transform these gifts into vessels of Your love and mercy. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, may our offering bring treasure from above. May these gifts bring justice and righteousness to Your children everywhere. Amen.
† Closing Hymn “I Know Whom I Have Believed” #714, verses 1, 2, 3
† Please stand as you are able.
The Light of Christ Goes Before Us into the World
1. I know not why God’s wondrous grace
to me he hath made known,
nor why, unworthy, Christ in love redeemed me for his own.
But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able
to keep that which I’ve committed unto him against that day.
2. I know not how this saving faith to me he did impart,
nor how believing in his word wrought peace within my heart.
But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able
to keep that which I’ve committed unto him against that day.
3. I know not how the Spirit moves, convincing us of sin,
revealing Jesus through the word, creating faith in him.
But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able
to keep that which I’ve committed unto him against that day.
Benediction
