Prelude #430 “O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee”

Please take time to prepare your heart and mind for worship.

The Light of the Candle Symbolizes Christ’s Presence Among Us

† Call to Worship                                         † Please stand as you are able.

Leader:    The Lord is our rock and our refuge.

People:  God is our fortress in times of trouble.

Leader:    The Holy One saves us from the hand of the wicked.

People:  God delivers us from our foes.

Leader:    Christ heals us from our infirmities.

All:         The Spirit frees us from the chains that bind us.  Rest in the Source of our refuge and our strength.

† Hymn “Abide With Me” #700verses 1, 2, 3, 5

              † Please stand as you are able.

1.   Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;

the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2.   Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;

earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;

change and decay in all around I see;

O thou who changest not, abide with me.

3.   I need thy presence every passing hour.

What but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?

Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be?

Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

5.   Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;

shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.

Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;

in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Unison Prayer                                                         You may be seated.

All:  Great Healer, we are beaten down by life’s suffering.  Make us whole, O God, and help us share Your healing with the world.  Free us from the demons that shackle our spirits, and set us free from the chains that binds us, that we may help break the chains of others.  Amen.

Children’s Time          “The B-I-B-L-E”

The B-I-B-L-E, yes, that’s the book for me,

I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E.

Reading from the New Testament:  Hebrews 12:14-29 (NRSVUE)

14 Pursue peace with everyone and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God, that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble and through it many become defiled. 16 See to it that no one becomes an immoral and godless person, as Esau was, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 You know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, even though he sought the blessing with tears.

18 You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. 20 (For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death.” 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”) 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

25 See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking, for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what is shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe, 29 for indeed our God is a consuming fire.

Leader:   This is the Word of God, for the People of God.

All:        Thanks be to God.

Favorite Hymn “How Great Thou Art” #77

1.   O Lord my God!  When I in awesome wonder,

Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,

Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Refrain:      Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee;

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee;

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

2.   When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;

When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur

And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;  [Refrain]

3.   And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;

That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,

He bled and died to take away my sin;   [Refrain]

4.   When Christ shall come, With shout of acclamation,

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.

Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,

And there proclaim, My God, how great Thou art!   [Refrain]

Joys and Concerns     Silent Prayer     Pastoral Prayer

   The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.

Reading from the Gospel:  Luke 13:10-17 (NRSVUE)

10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” 13 When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the Sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it to water? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the Sabbath day?” 17 When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame, and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things being done by him.

Hymn “Spirit of God” #2117verses 1, 3, 5

1.   Spirit of God, bright Wind, breath that bids life begin,

blow as you always do; create us anew.

Give us the breath to sing, lifted on soaring wing,

held in your hands, borne on your wings.

Alleluia!  Come, Spirit, Come!

3.   Spirit of God, bright Hands, even in far off lands

you hold all the human race in one warm embrace.

No matter where we go, you hold us together so,

held in your hands, borne on your wings.

Alleluia!  Come, Spirit, Come!

5.   Spirit of God in all, we gladly hear your call,

the life in our hands that sings, the power of your wings.

Born of your grace we rise, love shining in our eyes,

held in your hands, borne on your wings.

Alleluia!  Come, Spirit, Come!
