The Light of the Candle Symbolizes Christ’s Presence Among Us

† Praise Song “Who You Say I Am”           † Please stand as you are able.

Who am I that the highest King would welcome me?

I was lost but He brought me in, oh His love for me.

Oh His love for me.

Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed, I’m a child of God; yes I am.  In my Father’s house there’s a place for me.

I’m a child of God; yes I am.

Free at last He has ransomed me; His grace runs deep.

While I was a slave to sin, Jesus died for me; Yes He died for me.

Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed.  I’m a child of God; yes I am.  In my Father’s house there’s a place for me.

I’m a child of God; yes I am.

I am chosen, not forsaken, I am who You say I am.

You are for me not against me, I am who You say I am.

I am chosen, not forsaken, I am who You say I am.

You are for me not against me, I am who You say I am.

Oh I am who You say I am, Yes I am who You say I am.

Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed.  I’m a child of God; yes I am.  In my Father’s house there’s a place for me.

I’m a child of God; yes I am.

† Hymn “When I Survey the Wonderous Cross” #298

              † Please stand as you are able.

1.   When I survey the wondrous cross

on which the Prince of Glory died;

my richest gain I count but loss,

and pour contempt on all my pride.

2.   Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

save in the death of Christ, my God;

all the vain things that charm me most,

I sacrifice them to his blood.

3.   See, from his head, his hands, his feet,

sorrow and love flow mingled down.

Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,

or thorns compose so rich a crown.

4.   Were the whole realm of nature mine,

that were an offering far too small;

love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Unison Prayer                                                         You may be seated.

All:      Gracious and Loving God, we seek the freedom found in the grace we receive through Christ Jesus.  We seek to know more fully Your great love.  Turn us from our temptations.  Inspire us to open ourselves to the way of Christ, that as we examine our lives and live out these days, we may become examples of Your abundant love for all people.  May Your Divine Spirit tend us as angels attended Jesus in the wilderness, and may we feel revived and sustained to follow Jesus.  Amen.

Children’s Time    “All Night, All Day”

All night, all day, angels watching over me, my Lord.  All night, all day, angels watching over me.  All night, all day, angels watching over me, my Lord.  All night, all day, angels watching over me.

Reading from the New Testament:  Romans 5:12-21 (NRSVUE)

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned— 13 for sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin in the likeness of Adam, who is a pattern of the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. 16 And the gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the gift following many trespasses brings justification. 17 If, because of the one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. 19 For just as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so through the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 But law came in, so that the trespass might increase, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so grace might also reign through justification leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Leader:   This is the Word of God, for the People of God.

All:        Thanks be to God.

Joys and Concerns     Silent Prayer     Pastoral Prayer

   The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.

Reading from the Gospel:  Matthew 4:1-11 (NRSVUE)

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

‘One does not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written,

‘Worship the Lord your God,
and serve only him.’ ”

11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Sermon                  “Tested” by Pastor Marge

Praise Song “There Was Jesus”

Every time I tried to make it on my own, every time I tried to stand and start to fall, all those lonely roads that I have traveled on, there was Jesus.

When the life I built came crashing to the ground, when the friends I had were nowhere to be found, I couldn’t see it then, but I can see it now, there was Jesus.

In the waiting, in the searching, in the healing and the hurting,

like a blessing buried in the broken pieces, every minute, every moment of where I’ve been or where I’m going, even when I didn’t know it or couldn’t see it, there was Jesus.

For this man who needs amazing kind of grace, for forgiveness at a price I couldn’t pay, I’m not perfect, so I thank God every day, there was Jesus.  There was Jesus.

In the waiting, in the searching, in the healing and the hurting,

like a blessing buried in the broken pieces, every minute, every moment of where I been or where I’m going, even when I didn’t know it, or couldn’t see it,

There was Jesus on the mountain, in the valleys,

There was Jesus in the shadows of the alleys,

There was Jesus in the fire, in the flood,

There was Jesus always is and always was.

No, I never walk alone. You are always there.  Never walk alone.

In the waiting, in the searching, in the healing and the hurting,

like a blessing buried in the broken pieces, every minute, every moment of where I been or where I’m going, even when I didn’t know it, or couldn’t see it, there was Jesus.

There was Jesus.  There was Jesus.   O, there was Jesus.

† Closing Hymn “Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley” #2112

        † Please stand as you are able.

The Light of Christ Goes Before Us into the World

1.   Jesus walked this lonesome valley;

he had to walk it by himself.

Oh, nobody else could walk it for him;

he had to walk it by himself.

2.   We must walk this lonesome valley;

we have to walk it by ourselves.

Oh, nobody else can walk it for us;

we have to walk it by ourselves.

3.   You must go and stand your trial;

you have to stand it by yourself.

Oh, nobody else can stand it for you;

you have to stand it by yourself.

Benediction
